What’s in my kid’s Easter basket?

easter-basket-with-eggs_“Have your kids ever had Oreos?” “Do you ever buy candy?” “Do you ever let your kids eat junk food?”

I don’t like answering those questions. I want to help people be their best by fueling their bodies well. For parents this includes the bodies of their children. My own belief and interest in nutrition and wellness helps me get it right a lot of the time, but it doesn’t mean my kids spend Halloween inside with the lights off!

This year I wanted to pick-up some Easter basket goodies before my kids were home for spring break. I was at Target hours before the commencement of said spring break. Target does not sell jelly beans made with organic cane syrup and colored with kale and beet juice. Nor does it sell free-trade, organic 70% cacao chocolate in the shape of bunnies or chicks. So this year my kids are getting artificial dye and high fructose corn syrup in their Easter baskets. (Have mercy, that was hard for me to even type out.)

It’s a balance. I don’t usually have food with those ingredients in the house. I enjoy baking cookies, cakes and quick breads. I don’t bake jelly beans or m&m’s. So on Sunday my kids will have the regular junk I fight so hard against. But then we will go to church and spend time with family. Maybe I’ll get them to take a walk after dinner?

If you are just absolutely disgusted by me now and can’t believe I stooped so low – know there are better choices out there, my friend! (Although, I don’t think anyone really makes kale jelly beans?) Big chains like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have better options available. You can also find healthy goods online & have them shipped to your front door.

If you are not celebrating Easter this year – maybe just enjoy a carrot cake.

xo,

Amy
